The Male Nude: Turning the Gaze

I am thrilled to share that one of my favorite paintings, “Le Source,” has been curated by Michael Gormley and Peter Trippi into “The Male Nude: Turning the Gaze” exhibition at Equity Gallery in New York, on view June 8 - July 9, 2022.

“Le Source,” 2016, oil on basswood and walnut palette, 12 x 8 inches

While the female nude has long played a conspicuous role in western art, the genre’s symbolic scaffolding of gender hierarchy, and the accompanying sexualized objectification (if not exploitation) of women, have rendered in high relief our current culture’s questioning of gender roles and specifically the assumed dominance of the male (predatory) gaze.

This exhibition turns that gaze around, aiming to level the visual field through a full-frontal celebration of men’s bodies. It features a salon of works in a range of media and styles that explore the compositions, postures, and role-playing within this flourishing yet still underexposed genre.

There is an Opening Reception on Thursday, June 9th, from 6 - 8pm at 245 Broome St., NYC. Masks are required in the gallery, * masks are optional in the outdoor courtyard.
