I am drawn to contrasts.

I grew up with a paradoxical worldview emphasizing absolutes - good, evil, right, wrong - even while being embraced by liberal "free-thinking." Sifting through desire, fear, and faith, I combine concepts I feel are mutually exclusive: attraction & repulsion, masculine & feminine, ideal & flawed, assumed & described, terrifying & comforting, and repressed & exalted. Subtly blending contrasts in a painted image, I create a middle ground where it is difficult to see where one begins and another ends.

Binding my subject matter to intimate sources - my husband, my sister, my parents, myself - my paintings usually present a solitary figure as both the object of my inspiration as well as a vehicle by which I explore my reserved feminism.

I apply multiple layers of oil paint through anxious compulsion. With each approach to the canvas I negotiate divergent applications of paint. Embodying tension throughout the image, passages of acute focus contrast with less-developed space. Researching, redrawing, repainting through spirited color and active brushwork, I obsessively build up the human form, finding release when I paint flesh explicitly.

Charis J. Carmichael Braun grew up in New Ulm, MN. After a year as an exchange student in Switzerland  (Gruezi, mittenand!), she earned her BA from Bethany Lutheran College and her MFA from the New York Academy of Art.  She received a Juror's Award for her work in Representational Art in the 21st Century, University of Hawaii at Hilo, HI in 2015 and was chosen as a Sing For Hope Piano Artist in 2016. She has been published in PoetsArtists, The Huffington Post, LINEA: The Artist's Voice and Artists on Art.

As an arts administrator, she has worked for the Edward Hopper House in Nyack, NY; The League Residency at Vyt (Art Students League of New York), and the New York Academy of Art. She has managed two galleries in New York City, and has served on the boards of two greater New York City not-for-profits: as a founding member of Spark and Echo Arts, and as President of the Alumni Association of the New York Academy of Art.

With her husband Andrew Braun, a woodworker, Charis currently lives and works in Long Island, New York.
