🎨 Waggling with excitement... I received a grant! 🐝
β€œEven though the bee is small, there she is on the flower, doing something of value. And the value she creates there contributes to a larger ecosystem of value, in that mountain meadow, in that range of mountains, in the world and even the universe. And can’t you just feel how happy she is?” β€• Jay Ebben, Painted Hives
Dear friends,
I am proud and honored to announce that I have been awarded a "Creative Individual" grant! I am one of four recipients of this award in Long Island, which is part of New York State Council on the Arts' 2020 Decentralization Grant program.

Through this grant, I will paint portraits of notable beekeepers on Long Island. My "It Begins With A B(ee)" Portrait Project will give portrait participants a chance to share their personal trials and triumphs viewed through an artistic, apicultural lens.

Huntington Arts Council "Creative Individual" Grant supports artists creating NEW, original work in projects of outstanding artistic merit that involve a segment of the community through the development and creative processes of the artist's project.

My husband and I are members of the Long Island Beekeepers Club, and are enthusiastic beekeepers ourselves. As current conversations often turn toward issues like climate change and healthy living, ensuring the existence of pollinators on this planet is vital. Like a beehive has a complex system of relationships and responsibilities, a deeper understanding of how our human relationships depend on each other - and nature - is vital to our own well-being. This portrait project is designed to illustrate both notable caretakers of pollinators in my community, as well as the importance of personal environmental stewardship.
I will be documenting and sharing this project's progress on my website. Towards the end of 2020, the portraits will be exhibited with texts and audio describing their personal, and pollinator-oriented, stories.

I am grateful to the Board members of the Long Island Beekeeping Club and the panel judges from Huntington Arts Council who believed in this project, and now I invite you to watch the portraits come to life!
Thank you for letting me share my studio news with you.
Infrequently, I gather up a bit of news about my artwork in a short e-epistle like this, aiming for a semiannual share in Spring and Autumn. Thanks for staying connected with me.
